Just a quick note. The group’s next and final report (before the general election and we are forced to shut down shop for a bit before restarting after the election) will be out next Weds, 24 Feb. It is a call-to-arms for the next government to nurture and attract new business, particularly in the most deprived areas of the country, through regeneration. The next decade looks set to be difficult for the urban development sector as a weaker supply of credit to the private sector and severe public spending constraints will limit developers and the public sector alike. We have spoken to a wide range of professionals who are working at the coal face to get an idea of what they need to see happen. The report sets out four priorities which a new administration will have to implement if it wants to save regeneration from the twin pressures of a credit crunch and budget cuts. Specifically, we think they will need to: prioritise public investment, free up local authorities so they can finance regeneration, improve the planning system and increase the housing supply. You'll have to read the full report when it's out for the details. |
